Overview

Health informatics (HI) is an in demand field comprising applied research and the practice of informatics across clinical and public health domains. Informatics researchers develop, introduce, and evaluate new biomedically motivated methods in areas as diverse as data mining, natural language or text processing, cognitive science, human-computer interaction, decision support, databases and algorithms for analyzing large amounts of data generated in public health, clinical research and genomics/proteomics.

In this online program, you will develop the skills and knowledge around data, health and informatics needed to attract attention from recruiters and hiring managers in the fast growing healthcare industry.

You will gain a thorough understanding of the field of health informatics and its various subfields, including research, laboratory/precision medicine, imaging, and artificial intelligence. You will also explore the themes that serve as the foundation for different areas of biomedical informatics, including clinical and neuro-informatics.

Throughout four courses and hands-on projects, you will leverage the expertise of faculty from the Division of Health Informatics at the Yale School of Public Health, learning from real-world projects and live sessions with groups of high-caliber peers.

By committing 6-8 hours of online study per week for about 7 months, you can earn a Yale-issued Health Informatics MasterTrack Certificate that can help you in your future graduate studies or professional pursuits in both public health departments (e.g. CDC, local government) and the private sector (e.g. organizations that employ computer scientists and mathematicians/statisticians). After successfully completing the MasterTrack, you will also be eligible for conditional credit if accepted into the Yale School of Public Health’s Master of Public Health (MPH) graduate degree program.

Health Informatics on Fast Healthcare Interoperability Resources (FHIR)

In this project, you will act as an IT specialist at a healthcare institution. You will be challenged with exploring the development of a Fast Healthcare Interoperability Resources (FHIR) application to tackle critical healthcare needs for patients. The need can be any health-related problem for patients but should be supported by literature identifying it as a problem (e.g. enhancing prescription fill rates for patients discharged from the hospital).

In a ≤3-page paper you will identify the problem, understand what data you need to solve the problem and identify what standards (other than FHIR) are involved. You’ll also need to identify potential challenges with the required data and ensure data quality among others.

Overall, with this hands-on project you will learn how to demonstrate understanding of FHIR as a data standard and ways to apply lessons learned related to interoperability challenges.

In this course, you will receive an introduction to informatics topics pertinent to healthcare. Building a Precision Medicine Infrastructure

For this project, you’ll be a Chief Medical Information Officer (CMIO) at a healthcare institution. You’ll be challenged with making precision medicine a reality for your patients. There are many disparate parts that need to be brought together and work in concert using your IT skill set.

You’ll describe how you would set up such an infrastructure including what types of databases may be needed, security concerns, how potentially the data would be represented within the EHR and presented to patients and providers. Your plan should be supported by literature describing best practices and current applications.

In a ≤3-page paper you will identify desired database design, the differences between medicine data and other health data, security concerns of these types of data as well as potential challenges with the required data, among other aspects.

You’ll learn to demonstrate understanding of precision medicine and its current challenges and to apply concepts related to project-oriented IT development.

Overview

This course picks up where the previouse course leaves off, and introduces additional key informatics topics pertinent to healthcare. Through lectures, discussions, and real-world applications, you will survey a variety of informatics subfields including artificial intelligence, bioinformatics and precision medicine, data warehouses and registries, research informatics, electronic quality metrics and IT evaluation, software tools, and open science.

Linking Ontology to Database

The goal of this project is to link an ontology to a database to facilitate concept-based queries. It requires the use of the following MIMIC III demo datasets/tables to create a database: 1. Patients 2. Admissions 3. Diagnoses_ICD 4. D_ICD_Diagnoses.

In this project you’ll link this database to the Human Disease Ontology (DOID) accessible through the EBI OLS and you’ll learn how to integrate MIMIC demo datasets with ontologies to enable richer semantic queries.

Overview

In this course, you’ll be introduced to the common unifying themes that serve as the foundation for different areas of biomedical informatics, including clinical and neuro-informatics. This course requires coding knowledge and an advanced level of biomedical software experience.

Using Text Mining to Classify Patients

In this project, you’ll apply the skills you learned to separate patients based on their health condition. Specifically, you’ll classify patients based on the type of infection they have. You’ll use the MIMIC III dataset for this purpose. You will be provided with a sample dataset on the course website for this project.

You’ll learn how to apply feature selection and ensemble classification and clustering models on MIMIC data.

Overview

In this course, you’ll take a deeper dive into biomedical informatics and data science. Through lectures, tutorials, discussions, and applied practice, you will explore biomedical natural language processing, data mining, machine learning, modeling of biological systems, and high performance computation in biomedicine. This course requires coding knowledge and an advanced level of biomedical software experience.
